Interior Designer Kathy Smith

Interior designer Kathy Smith used autumn colors — brown, beige, and gold neutrals with splashes of coral — to give this home in Charlotte, North Carolina, depth and warmth. These colours flow throughout the house, creating an inviting mood. She also used a lot of luxurious fabrics such as silks, mohairs, and velvets — things that wear well but are also beautiful.

The living room doubles as a family room, with a flat-screen TV over the fireplace and floors covered in natural Merida Bali, a woven jute that's softer and more child-friendly than sisal. Upholstered furnishings in earth tones and corals harmonize gently with walls painted Farrow & Ball's Biscuit.

Kitchen cabinets and walls are painted Biscuit and ceiling and trim is Lime White.

Off the entrance hall is the music room. Kathy designed the sinuous chaise longue; its low back keeps the view open.

With walls bathed in Sherwin-Williams's Pale Earth and trim done in Rope, the master bathroom exudes warmth and elegance. Curtains are Nomi's Torino hand-painted velvet.
