My Favourite Movies - 500 Days of Summer

Voice-over:
This is a story of boy meets girl. The boy, Tom Hansen, grew up believing
that he’d never truly be happy until the day he met the one.
The girl, Summer Finn, did not share this belief.
You should know up front this is not a love story.

This is the opening voice over to one of my favourite films, 500 Days Of Summer.
I absolutley love this movie and it could be because I think Joseph Gordon-Lovitt is adorable!
But it could also be the story line is very rarely seen in a movie where it comes from
the boys perspective, it's usually the girl that falls for the boy.

If you feel like an innocent little rom com, watching cute and quirky Zooey Deschanel
and a dance scene from Gordon-Lovitt, 500 Days of Summer is worth a watch!

A Favourite Movie - The End Of Love

I watched such a good film this week, The End Of Love.
It might not be to everyone's liking but I really liked it.

It's called The End Of Love, written, directed and starred by actor Mark Webber.
But actually he isn't the star of the film .... Isaac is!

I watched this film really knowing nothing about it except what I got from the trailer
and knowing that it premiered at Sundance (I love a good Sundance film).
After watching the film it really stuck in my mind, I wanted to know more so I did a little bit of
googling and was surprised by what I found out but at the same time it all started to make sense...

The End Of Love is a story of Mark, a struggling actor and his relationship with his 2 year old son Isaac. Isaac's mum passes away unexpectedly and we go on the journey of Mark grieving whilst coming to terms that he is now raising his young son alone.

What is incredible in this film is Isaac.
He couldn't be any cuter, a gorgeous little blonde who is so inquisitive with lots of questions for dad.
I kept thinking what a great little actor but how at that age can he do that?
I guess it helps to be working with his own dad!
Isaac (real name) is Mark's real life son and that just made the film so much sweeter
and an intensely personal film.

Anthem magazine recently did an interview with Mark and the answer he gave to this question
gave a real insight as to why the film is so good :
Mark, you mentioned in a previous interview that your son Isaac doesn’t have the ability to be false because he’s in the present all the time. How did you use that to your advantage while shooting this film?

MW: It was nine parts really hard work and one part crazy magic.
As his dad, I understand his rhythms throughout the day and I know his moods.
Early on during production, I let my producers know that we had to build this whole movie around my son. If he’s feeling a little cranky one day, it would be a good idea to utilize that for a certain scene. Everything had to be scheduled around Isaac. It was so exhilarating.
The conversation that I have with my son at the end of the film about life and death, I had been saving that conversation. I only had that one opportunity and we could never repeat it.
If the cameras didn’t work or something went wrong, we simply wouldn’t have it.
There’s something about doing things like that, which creates this magical energy

MW: Isaac’s not here because I don’t want this to be the beginning of his career.
We want to protect him. Since we were able to make the movie in a way that’s noninvasive,
he didn’t know that we were making a movie while we were shooting it,
let alone that it would end up at Sundance.

(you can read more of this Anthem interview here )

If you like a story, a real story in a movie then this is a film you might like.

Celebrity Home - Lake Bell

I first saw actress Lake Bell in the TV Miss Match with Alicia Silverstone (did you ever watch this?)
and then went on to see her and like her in movies such as Over Her Dead Body,
What Happens In Vegas, No Strings Attached and one of my favourite tv shows
How To Make It In America.

Lake opened her home recently to Vogue. Her mum is an interior designer so it's no wonder
that she's has a really great style and she's clearly made her West Hollywood home her own.
It's not too precious or styled and has some quirk and personality.
It's different from what I am usually drawn to but I like it, especially the outside areas.

My week with Instagram ...

It's Sunday and time to review my week ...

  1. I finished my holiday to the Gold Coast with the very handsome Mr Harry Kewell standing next to me at the security check at the airport. So no, this isn't my own snap as I know I just would have embarrassed myself if I got my phone out to take a snap, he was just too close haha!
  2. After getting back to Cairns on Sunday night, I headed out again to Sydney on Monday morning. Good thing I like flying!
  3. Hit Sydney with some retail therapy at Westfield in the city (window shopping only of course) before starting work.
  4. Gift from work, yummy Aesop Jet Set travel kit. It's a great gift idea.
  5. One of my very good friends sent me this quote this week and I thought it was just priceless!
  6. Overcast and raining in Sydney this week but it was still a fab view across Manly from our restaurant, Manly Pavillion
  7. Back in Cairns and the packing has begun!
  8. Went to the movies and saw Moneyball - my quick review, good story, clever, interesting insight into the business of baseball, Brad Pitt is a bit cute, Jonah Hill has great delivery, they work well together.
  9. I finally started handing out my business cards for new "coming soon" business designed by the lovely Jen @ Made By Girl. Thanks Jen I love them x

    A Favourite Movie - A Single Man

I finally had a chance to sit down and watch this last night.

I really don't even know where to start with this one.
    Firstly well done Tom Ford.

He has displayed an incredible talent of directing and telling a story, a beautiful story at that.
Every detail in this film is perfection whether it be the impeccable wardrobe, adorable vintage mercedes, the cinematography or even the placement of every item you see in every scene.

Set in 1962 Los Angeles, A Single Man is the story of college professor George Falconer and his struggle to find the meaning of his life after the sudden death of his long time partner, Jim.

Whilst Colin Firth, as George did a wonderful job - he is such a great actor he did have to share the spotlight with his infamous mid-century home. .

The house in Glendale, LA was built by architect John Lautner in 1949 and is known as the Schaffer Residence. Since the movie the 2 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom house has gone on the market at $1.45 million.

The other beautiful home of focus was that of his closest friend Charley, played by Julianne Moore.
Her home was more glam, Hollywood Regency style.

Love love love .... so many things I love here
I almost died when I saw the headboard so in love with it!
How goregous is her dressing table, gorgeous combination of fabrics with that mirror and those lamps
As George and Charley have dinner, no attention to detail has been spared on the dining table, so pretty

This great film is topped off by a very well thought out cast lead by ...
    Colin Firth as George Flaconer
    Matthew Goode as Jim :(
    Julianne Moore fabulous as Charley
Nicholas Hoult as Kenny (yes, he's that kid from About A Boy)
Ginnifer Goodwin in a small part of Mrs Strunk, she was just cute

There has been alot of outspoken opinion of this film and when you watch it you
might see what some people are talking about!!

But for me all I saw in this film is just pure beauty.
I read this quote of Tom Ford and to me he puts it perfectly ...

"We all go through the same things in life -
    love, romance, grief, isolation,
trying to come to an understanding
    of what life is about"

    Movie Home : The Holiday

One of my favourite movies is The Holiday with Jude law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet and Jack Black.

The Holiday is your typical little romantic, bit comedy movie about 2 ladies who at unhappy points of their lives, decide swap houses for the holidays. Now as it would happen in real life (note the sarcasm here!!) Amanda (Diaz) lives in a beautiful big LA home but she swaps with Iris (Winslet) who lives in a very pretty little cottage in England. The characters are kind of cute, story line really simple but what I really love about this movie so much are the two very different homes.

First up is Amanda's. It's a modern house but not cold :

I love the fluffy carpet. In one scene Iris suffering from some jetlag jumps into bed and with a press of a button block put blinds just roll down - now that is luxury! Below is the seating nook in the master bedroom, nice!

In the movie Diaz is in the movie business, hence why she has this wall of movies in her comfy media room.

And then Iris' home in the Cotswolds. Not quite my personal taste but it is very cute :

It's a good movie if you're feeling tired or not feeling well and you are just happy to snuggle up by yourself and watch it.
