The Monserrate Palace is a absolute magical place located in Sintra's Monserrate Park and is considered one of the most fabulous neo-Gothic building designed by architect James Knowles . It was built in 1858, by order of Sir Francis Cook, Viscount of Monserrate , who was one of the richest British merchants and recognized art collector .
The palace was the summer residence for the Cook family and it was built on the ruins of the neo -Gothic mansion built by Gerard Visme, an English merchant who owned the granting of import of Brazil wood in Portugal and was responsible for the first Monserrate Palace.
It is a copy of evocative Portuguese Romanticism. During the 1920s, the palace was put up for sale and eventually be acquired by the state in 1949 and currently ranked as a Public Interest since 1978 but only reopened its doors in 2007 due to the advanced state of degradation in which it was found.
It is worth visiting this Magnificent Palace as so the gardens surrounding it and contribute to its beautiful but slow recovery because, as the dedicated staff who work in the palace says " We are open to remodel! "
