The Sum Of All Fears - Different Chairs * A Soma De Todos Os Medos - Cadeiras Diferentes

The Sum of All Fears is something I created to talk about the 'fears' people tell me about, everyday! Because when it comes to make decisions in our own homes, it seems like we are afraid of everything!! This is one more. Can I use different chairs around a table? Will it look awkward? What kind of chairs can I mix? Will they have to match somehow? With what kind of table will it work?

Ohhhh so many doubts...

***

1.
It does work better in a space where harmony predominates in terms of style and tones,
and not in a room with a great mix of style, lines and colors.

***

2.

There may be something in common in the model of the chair and lined patterns or colors. Again everything has to do with the general harmony.

 ***

3.

It does work particularly well when the chairs on top of the table are padded and slightly higher to give greater importance to the top places on the table. In this case there are two models, but very similar lines that come together perfectly.

***

4.
There may be commonalities, such as wooden arms are the same line and the same tone of wood as the remaining chairs.

***

DO NOT MIX
Chairs with different wood tones.

CAN MIX
Chairs painted with different colors.
Painted chairs with chairs lined with fabric.
Wooden chairs with upholstered chairs.
Contemporary or design with classic chairs (in this case
have a little more attention to shape, but may work nicely)

***

Room of the Week

How lovely is this living space in the home of Interior Designer and Blogger Erin Gates?

That coffee table is to die for.
I'm no stranger to hearing all about the "trunk as a coffee table" option
{I hear it almost daily}
but I never thought of it in a crisp, beautiful white.

That blue, custom made, velvet sofa is gorgeous and compliments the
two French Provincial chairs so beautifully.

You can see more of Erin's beautiful Boston home here on The Everygirl.

Icon - Wishbone

Also called the CH24 or Y chair, this piece is an icon in furniture design.

Designed by Hans Wegner in 1949, this piece is still today one of the most popular chairs produced.
It is classically beautiful, light and sculptural.
Craftsmanship is clearly the word to describe this piece with over 100 steps carried out by hand to produce.
And the seats are hand woven with paper cord that can last up to 50 years.

A touch of Tolix

The Tolix chair is a great option to use both inside and out. First designed in 1934 by Xavier Pauchard with the orinigal use for hospitals, factories, offices and public parks. Today you can buy vintage Tolix (if you can find) or there are some great replica's and they are making their way as a stylish statement into a number of different spaces.

I have considered this as my extra 2 dining chairs, but I'm actually thinking more for outside for me in a bright colour. Surprisingly not yellow but in another colour for the outdoors.

Guest Post : The Zhush

Hi, I'm Sue from The Zhush! I love so many different styles of chairs that it's tough for me to choose just one...but since Sarah asked if I would, I decided to narrow it down to the one chair that eludes me:

The Eames lounge and ottoman!

I've always loved the classic good looks of the Eames lounge and ottoman, however despite owning an original Eames white rocking chair and a charming Eames wooden stool, I can't seem to find a place for this awesome chair and ottoman in my own home. For now I guess I will just have to love it from afar...and especially when its all decked out in cool Missoni fabric or simple and soft in white!

I hope you enjoyed my shout out to my favorite chair!

Guest Post : Flourish Design + Style

The lovely Sarah at Flourish Design + Style

******************************************************

Thanks so much Sarah for having me at My First Little Place!

When Sarah asked me what my favorite type of chair was, I immediately thought settee. A settee is on my most coveted list, I am holding out to find the right one at the right price for my round dining table. I think it would be such an indulgence to sit, feet curled under, sipping a tea or coffee with a favorite magazine, or visiting with friends after dinner.

( or coloring with my munchkins :)

I love having cozy spots throughout the house, and this would finish my dining space perfectly! xx

Guest Post : Bright.Bazaar

I'm starting a new little series of guest posts. The best ting about blogging is to share information and ideas so I've asked some very talented bloggers to share with us what is their favourite chair design.

*******************************************

Hello! I'm Will from
Bright.Bazaar and it's a pleasure to be sharing my favourite chair design with you today.

My favourite chair studio is called James UK, which features a range of different styles and designs, from armchairs to sofas. When I celebrated my 21st birthday I was lucky enough to be given this rocker chair as a present and ever since then I've been a huge fan of James Harrison's work. The rocker chair is special to me because it's been a key piece of furniture through the various apartments I've lived in since graduating; it's timeless style and smooth lines are always welcoming. At the moment it's in the corner of my bedroom and I've dressed it up with a cashmere throw, which has made the a great spot for a cosy read of my favourite magazines.

Of James' current range, I'm drawn to the Alywn Compact Sofa because it's super stylish and sophisticated but at the same time the pop of colour in the buttons adds a splash of fun to the design. Plus, as I tend to live in small apartments it's pretty practical, too.

Be sure to check out all the designs in the James UK collection; it won't disappoint!

Thanks for having me over, Sarah.

Some finishing touches

This blog chronicles my entire kitchen renovation from start to finish. Greentea Design has provided me with their solid wood kitchen cabinets, and I'm taking care of the rest.

If you'd like to be brought up to date, check out the archive in the sidebar for previous posts. I posted recently about the countertop installation, and now for a few more completed items and some finishing touches.

The kitchen is SLOWLY finishing up, and since some readers have been asking where things are at I took some photos the other day around the space and my living room as well. But first I'll show some things that were finished lately. First up is the valance my contractor made to hide the under-cabinet lighting since the cabinets are basically flush underneath. He found wood with a grain and stain that perfectly matches the cabinets. I asked him to do it simple with squared edges and it blends so well.

Trim was installed along the base of the cabinets because my contractor made sure they were perfectly level and had to put some shims underneath in a few places which could be seen. I was unsure of how it would look at first but it's growing on me.

Then there is the hatch over the basement stairs. It's been painted, and a hole has been cut for all the cats to go down to the litter boxes. It was hilarious seeing them climb in and out once it was cut, checking it out.

I also got the contractor to completely frame out the box he built over the upper cabinets so it looked more finished and now that it's painted out it doesn't stand out so much.

My boyfriend (and I) were going to make a dining table out of wood that I would paint, but my contractor offered to do it since he had the proper tools and so far I've gotten the top and I'm still waiting for a base. He offered to build that too, and suggested a pedestal style which I think would be perfect to keep the space open. This is the table top placed on top of my marble side table I'm currently using as a makeshift dining table. (Check out the girth of Felix! I'm starting to worry at the rapid rate of his porkiness). And as some of you may notice, I bought a second Panton chair, and 2 more chairs which you'll see further in this post.

That's all the progress to date. The backsplash is being installed tomorrow, and the shocks to keep the hatch open will be installed this weekend. I've got to contact my contractor how's been MIA for a few days now but I'll forgive him due to the insane weather we've been having.

Now for some photos I took around the kitchen and living room. Most of what you see are existing pieces I had and I'm sure this setup will change weekly. I'm thinking about a piece of art on the wall to the right of the stove, or maybe a couple stainless Ikea shelves, but I'm leaning more towards art. My living room needs alot of work to get it meshing with the kitchen but funds are dwindling so I may have to be VERY creative in there. The yellow chair for sure needs to either go upstairs or get a coat of black gloss. That's just a couple of my ideas...
