If we would have to explain to people around the world what Alentejo is, we would have to say that it's like Portuguese Texas with shepherds instead of cowboys, sheep instead of horses and cork trees instead of cactus! It is definitely our most gorgeous countryside views in the south-central region of the country. The origin of its name, "Além-Tejo", literally translates to "Beyond the Tagus" or "Across the Tagus". The region is separated from the rest of Portugal by the Tagus river, and extends to the south where it borders the Algarve. The landscape is primarily one of soft rolling hills and plains, with cork oaks and olive trees, or the occasional vine.
It blew my mind away when I found VILLA EXTRAMUROS, this amazing architectural pearl right in the Evora area of Alentejo. It's amazing and the thing that surprised me the most was the very contemporary villa, decorated with furniture and art from the 1950’s until today, with a Parisian twist and it's a Hotel! It actually got the Hotel and Lodge Best Design Hotel Award 2012. How did I not knew about this place!

Se tivéssemos de explicar ao resto do mundo o que é o Alentejo talvez tivesse graça dizer que é o Texas de Portugal com pastores em vez de Cowboys, ovelhas em vez de cavalos e sobreiros em vez de cactus! Bom... é muito mais do que isso e talvez as nossas mais bonitas paisagens.
Claro que fiquei sem palavras quando descobri a VILLA EXTRAMUROS esta pérola da arquitectura mesmo junto a Évora, mais precisamente em Arraiolos. E o que me surpreendeu ainda mais foi o facto de para além da arquitectura contemporânea, decorada com mobiliário dos anos 50 e segundo eles um certo twist Parisiense, é um HOTEL!! E que até já foi premiado com o
Hotel & Lodge Best Design Hotel Award 2012. Como é que eu não sabia disto!!!?
